Comprehending Close
52
This poem is inspired by the artist Close. His pixelated art is both intriguing and inspiring. This is my contribution at the encouragement of One Stop Poetry's Friday Poetically.
Are we to step back
Take in the whole of life
Focus till it makes sense
Retrace, retract our place
Discount, recount, ponder
Adjust the aperture
Become observers
Dialed in but not submersed
Understanding not participating
Or should we just jump
Ankle deep in blobs of color
Life painted upon our skin
Close enough to drown in the tactility
Experience blurring comprehension
So drunk in being that we lose meaning
Are we here to do this thing
To play this game
Or here to ask why there even is one

I could do with a bit more submerging. Great poem Patricia.
oh i am going feet first and figuring it could not hurt too bad right? very poignant piece...
A question I often consider when I write. Does the writing about an experience remove the artist from the experience itself, make one an observer rather than a participant? How to balance the two roles is a tricky question and one that you've captured well in this poem.
i def. think we should just jump...and experience blurring compression...i liked your poem a lot patricia and nice to meet you
I think we should analyze our spontaneous immersion... :) This was fun and well thought out.
This is something I have worked on my entire life. I jumped in ankle deep. Focusing on today and a little bit on tomorrow. I love this. Susie
Oh, you said this so well! Focus 'til it makes sense, dialed in but not submersed, how well that can describe us when we face something challenging, or new. A bit like describing our faith at times.
p.s. what a lovely name you have!
very inspiring poem. In the pprocess of Learning to jump .
Wonderful reflections that I'm sure Close would applaud.
I think what is most intriguing about his work is the spaces between the blobs - like an extension of the way all artists use space, but instead of a portrayal of space he uses actual space. Thanks for sharing this wonderful artist with us.
I'm for jumping in and making sense of it as we go, sort of the way Mr. Close does it.
What a wonderful hub Patricia for my first visit to your work...thank you so much!
A beautiful tribute to a talented artist I did not know about...
Personally, I love the extremes. Dynamic is everything for me in terms of my art, my writing, my life, so to "step back" and revel in the abstract is only the opposing swing of complete immersion and satiation. How incredible life is and thank you putting what feels like my life into a beautiful sweet poem...
For me it's not why there is this game, but why am I so lucky to be part of it..
Very interesting the One Stop Poetry's site as well...
Thanks again,
bb
I do not know the artist, but your use of the language makes me happy that I know that other artist... you.
Once more an excellent piece of writing. Patricia.
"... he sees the world broken into tiny bits of color" like a pigeon, but they see the world in slow motion.
That's why they get squidged by cars on the road a lot.

Hi Patricia,
I think we'd all like to think of ourselves as someone that does "just jump...Ankle deep in blobs or color...Life painted upon our skin," but all too often, do analyze everything too much. You've hit on a subject I am close too, and hit it, or should I say, touched it gently yet persistently. Makes me think about it.
